Product Experience Alignment

Complex products should feel like one product.

Helping product organizations align hardware, software, services and teams around one customer experience.

Erin Bryant — Former Director, UX & Service Design — Motorola Solutions

Customers don’t experience your org chart.
They experience your product.

Hardware, software, workflows, and services converging into one customer experience Four inputs — hardware, software, workflows, and services — converge into a single outcome: one customer experience. Hardware Software Workflows Services One customer experience

Does this sound familiar?

  • Hardware and software don’t feel like one product
  • No one owns the end-to-end experience
  • Engineering, product, and UX see the problem differently
  • Workflows have grown organic workarounds

That’s not necessarily a UX problem. It’s an alignment problem.

Someone who can see across the whole system

A systems view

Someone who naturally looks past a single interface to the complete workflow and experience.

A neutral outside perspective

Not tied to one internal department — able to see what’s hard to see from inside the org chart.

Cross-functional facilitation

The ability to help different teams understand the same problem and align on a direction.

Erin partners with strong internal UX and product teams — rather than replacing them.

Who

Erin Bryant

Former Director, UX & Service Design

Motorola Solutions

20+years complex products & platforms
7U.S. patents
Globalleadership across product, UX, research & engineering

Twenty years inside the kinds of problems I now help companies solve. My work has lived at the intersection of physical products, software, workflows, and services — helping teams understand the customer problem before expensive product decisions become difficult to reverse.

Representative experience

APX NEXT & ViQi

Voice-first interaction strategy for a mission-critical platform, balancing safety, reliability, and usability under extreme constraints.

Problem

A mission-critical device platform needed a voice interaction layer that public-safety users could trust under stress.

Complexity

The experience spanned hardware constraints, embedded software, regulated safety requirements, and global engineering teams.

Approach

Grounded the design in real field conditions and cross-functional research rather than treating voice as a bolt-on feature.

Alignment

Brought UX, engineering, and product together around one definition of the interaction problem before major build decisions.

Outcome

Shipped as one integrated capability across the global APX portfolio — the platform went on to win two Good Design Australia Awards.

Recognized externally: two Good Design Australia Awards for the APX NEXT smart radio platform.

Also representative of: APX NEXT MOTOTRBO Ion RadioCentral

Where I look

The problems aren’t inside the layers. They’re in the seams between them.

Layers of a product experience with seams between them, compared to how organizations typically assign ownership Hardware, software, workflow, and service are shown as layers with seams between each. Below, ownership is split into Team A, Team B, and Team C, which do not align with where the seams actually fall. Hardware seam Software seam Workflow seam ServiceHow organizations typically own it Team A Team B Team C

Ownership boundaries rarely line up with the seams where the experience actually breaks. That gap is where I look first.

The approach

A practical way of working, not a proprietary framework

Listen Understand the ecosystem Identify breakdowns Align stakeholders Prioritize opportunities Path forward

A place to start

Product Experience Alignment Diagnostic

A focused engagement designed to answer one question: where is the experience breaking down — and what should we do about it?

Discovery

  • Leadership & stakeholder interviews
  • Product & workflow review

Experience Analysis

  • Map the end-to-end journey
  • Identify friction & gaps

Alignment

  • Facilitate stakeholder workshops
  • Build shared understanding

Recommendations

  • Prioritized opportunity areas
  • Path-forward roadmap

The product is clarity, alignment, and better product decisions.

Let’s talk about where your product experience is getting complicated.
