Public safety personnel operate in environments where attention is scarce and interaction failure can carry real consequences. APX NEXT represented an opportunity to rethink how officers accessed information, communicated, and managed connected capabilities — not simply redesign the radio interface.

My role was to help translate those operational workflows into a coherent product experience spanning voice interaction, touchscreen UI, connected applications, provisioning, updates, and fleet services.

ViQi explored how voice interaction could reduce dependence on manual device navigation in hands-busy, eyes-up situations where conventional UI interaction was undesirable or unsafe. The question wasn’t “how do we design a voice UI” — it was where an emerging interaction technology could materially improve a real operational workflow.

The touchscreen interface and connected suite of apps and services — covering coverage, updates, location awareness, and fleet operations — needed to work alongside ViQi as one coherent system, not as separate features competing for attention.

I drove customer research and usability validation across the voice, touch, and connected experience — testing whether the interaction model held up under real operating conditions before committing further engineering investment at scale.
